Pianist Daniel Beliavsky, a Steinway artist, musician and film maker, was given a pair of eye-tracking glasses, along with his student Charlotte Bennett.
The results confirm that the best pianists stay ahead of the game: we do not follow our hands, more look ahead to where the next move – or challenge – lies.
It’s a bit like driving a car on a road you are reasonably familiar with. Don’t think about the piece of tarmac you are driving on, but concentrate on the T junction ahead, or the dangerous bend you have encountered before.
Music really is a journey, and the best musicians have a half an eye on the road ahead.
